Klein (Small) Curacao is an island about 4 hours (about 25 nautical miles) sailing distance from Bonaire. We decided to stay a night in Klein Curacao. When we got there, there was a huge Coast Guard ship from Aruba/Curacao. We anchored in 10 feet of water over a nice sandy bottom. Klein Curacao is an underwater mountain and within 100 feet of shore, the water drops off to 500 feet or more. We went to shore and were told that the coast guard ship comes to this island often for drug interdiction and human smuggling as it is close to Venezuela and Colombia. While exploring the island, we noticed ‘Bad Bunny’ had pulled its anchor loose and was drifting out to open ocean. Oops! The wind was so strong that the anchor had slid back and dropped off the sandy shelf we were on. Emergency! We ran full speed to the dinghy and hurried to get the boat. This is the first time it has ever happened, and I am hoping it never happens again!
Klein Curacao is easy to access from Curacao. There is a tour boat (http://www.MermaidBoatTrips.com) that runs from Curacao. We met a couple staying/camping in a tent under a thatched hut for the weekend. At night they had the whole island to themselves with blue sky, white sand, countless stars, and a big Open Ocean! John also spoke to a guy ‘Andy’ who lives there for three days a week working for the tour boat. PS: There are two sides on this island; (1) the East side where the wind blows from the Caribbean where we saw lots of plastic garbage. Contrarily (2) the West side where it is protected from the wind, has beautiful sand and an emerald ocean. Seeing all the plastic garbage, I felt guilty and promised myself that I would use less plastic bottles and bags.- Home
