Sailing from La Paz to Puerto Escondido in Mexico

(November 20 to December 3, 2021) The Sea of Cortez has been amazing us. Many mountains and many islands, they stand by the open sea, as deep rooted with proud.

After leaving La Paz, we mostly motored from one island to another island and kept going north, about 15-20 miles a day. Our Thanksgiving Day was uneventful with our gracious guests, all shining stars in a dark sky!

(November 7 to 20, 2021) As always, the most important thing in life is timing. We are happy! The weather here now is beautiful unlike the summer weather which is hot, and sticky. We are sleeping with our windows open, under blankets, and a cool breeze blowing through the boat.

Even the cats have noticed the difference. During the “coldest” part of the night my cat Happy is sleeping on my arm, on my leg, between my knees etc. Usually she sleeps near me, but not touching. Now, she can’t get enough contact. I feel like a human heater.

Sailing from La Cruz to La Paz, Mexico

(November 7, 2021) We have been tacking upwind (Zig Zag sailing) and motoring for more than a week. We left Mainland Mexico at La Cruz, crossed the Sea of Cortez, and arrived near La Paz, Baja California. In the USA, there is the state of California. In Mexico, there is the Baja California Peninsula. Baja means low/drop in Spanish. There are two Mexican States in the Baja California Peninsula: Baja California and Baja California Sur (South).

Started Sailing up the Sea of Cortez

It is good to be back at sea. It is locally called either Sea of Cortez, Mar de Cortez, or Gulf of California; no matter what you call it, I will say it again, it is nice to be back at sea! The beautiful and tranquil sea, the quietness with nothing but nature, just pure wave and wind sound in my bed, I feel full. I cannot ask for more. Today’s journey started with watching the sunrise in the layers of mountains. A school of dolphins were with us for a while.

Excellent Medical Checkup in Mexico

Doctor Shukan’s Office, La Cruz, Mexico

October is my birthday month and when I usually have my annual physical checkup. Many doctors and dentists in Mexico speak good English. I visited Doctor Shukan’s office which is near La Cruz Marina in Mexico. He is well-known by the cruisers/expats community in this area. The office collected my blood and urine samples. When reports were ready, I had a long and pleasant consultation with him. As I live on a boat and travel all over, I see doctors in different countries. First Dock Party during COVID-19

As we plan to leave here (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico) soon, heading to La Paz in Baja California, Mexico, I suggested to the neighboring cruisers that we have a Sunset Pot-Luck dock party. We enjoyed a beautiful evening with Fred and Judy on S/V Wings (USA) and Viviane and Luc on S/V O2 (Belgium, http://orinocotoo.com/).

Viviane loved the color of the Spring Rolls and wanted to take a photo. The picture came out great, showing my yummy dishes along with me as well as S/V Bad Bunny. Cooking Shrimp Tempura and Vietnamese Spring Rolls, was a lot of work but I was very happy that everyone loved my dishes.

Hurricane and TEQUILA

Hurricane “Nora” passed right above us on Saturday, August 28th, 2021. One of the dockhands said that the worst hurricane that he had ever seen. Two sailboats were washed ashore from the anchorage. One is sitting on the beach and might be recoverable, the other sank when it struck the rocks on the jetty at the marina entrance. Knowing the arrival of “Nora”, we secured the boat as much as we can. This hurricane (Category 1) was not catastrophic but it did minor damages in the marina property and to some boats. Upcoming September is the rainiest and the busiest hurricane month in this area.

Exercise, the Fountain of Youth

Practice brings us better living. Thus when I am awake, I practice “Dwell on the beauty of life”. It lets me to live mindfully with appreciation.

My sailing around the world has been stopped. I am happy that I am here in Mexico not in French Polynesia at this moment, living on the boat. Mexico is pretty free and laid back with COVID restrictions. There are tourists, tour boats, organized tours etc.

Waiting Waiting Waiting

From Monday to Saturday, it seems we spend lots of time waiting for contracted jobs to be completed. Waiting makes us frustrated. Because of the heat and strong sun, we don’t really push the delivery date, and it is super hard to do any outside work after 10am. To motivate ourselves, on Sundays, we committed to explore this area. I get more energy when I meet and talk to people. I feel healthier when I do outdoor activities.

PS: This area, Puerto Vallarta offers a lot to the tourists. Many condo buildings and hotels are all over.
